Tokyo Conducts Large-Scale Terror Drill on Subway Ahead of Sarin Attack Anniversary

World Insight News - Live Updates

As Japan approaches the 30th anniversary of the infamous Tokyo subway sarin gas attack, authorities conducted a large-scale counterterrorism drill on March 13 in Koto Ward, Tokyo.
The drill simulated a scenario where a toxic liquid was released inside a train, testing emergency response capabilities across multiple agencies, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, the Tokyo Fire Department, and St.
Luke's International Hospital.
The exercise involved approximately 100 participants using an actual train and a replica subway station to practice emergency protocols.

Specialized units donned hazmat suits, examined the hazardous liquid, and secured the scene, while another team decontaminated affected areas.
Forensic experts were also dispatched to collect evidence.
Tokyo Metropolitan Police Chief Kazuko Yokoyama emphasized the importance of never forgetting the tragedy that claimed the lives of 14 people and injured over 5,000 in 1995. Authorities remain on high alert, citing the continued threat of chemical terrorism worldwide.
